PART 3: EXTRA RESOURCE

ORIENTING YOUR BODY

Orienting is a core biological impulse that helps us stay safe and connect with the world around us.

Just like animals, we use orienting from the moment we are born. It helps us explore, learn, and know if we are in a safe or dangerous situation.

There are two important types of orienting: one is for staying safe (defensive orienting), and the other is for exploring, enjoyment and curiosity (exploratory orienting).

When we go through scary or tough things, it can disrupt our ability to be in the here and now, so our orienting impulse can get a little confused. Our body might become too alert and defensively look for danger all the time, or we might feel lost and disconnected from the world, and stop orienting completely.

Either way this primes the system for dysregulation.

By bringing our orienting impulse back to its full strength, and by paying attention to what's happening around us, we can feel safe and connected again.

Remember, orienting is more than just a practice; it's a natural part of who we are and helps us be present in the here and now.

So let's use our natural orienting impulse and explore the world around us with curiosity.

Enjoy the practice.

PLEASE NOTE: you may try this and think "nothing happened?!". But one moment in time doing one practice isn't going to shift stored survival stress overnight. Our system has so many layers, so many cob webs, so many shields of armour, so many past experiences that never allowed us to notice ourselves, notice our environment, or process whats occurring inside when we do. So it makes complete sense if you do feel this way.
